History
Pia Cyrulnik grew up in Brooklyn, NY and attended School of Visual Arts, NYC where she earned a bachelor of Fine Arts in design (1981.) After working in package design and special effects for a few years, she enrolled at NYU to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting (1985.) Pia began painting satirical murals on furniture and became known very quickly (1988-1999.) Her work was displayed in galleries throughout the country. Throughout the 90's, Pia became known for murals intended to teach the invaluable lessons of the Holocaust to a new generation. She received high accolades for her work. Pia was named "1 of 5 Inspirational Jewish Women of the Year" by the Women of Reform Judaism (1999.) Pia began to work as a designer at LivingRoomsPlus in Paramus, NJ (1999-2005.) She enjoyed working with the array of clientele from sports figures to Grammy award winning musicians. Soon buying for the showroom as well as designing hundreds of homes a year became part of her responsibilities. She was recognized each of her six years with an Award for Excellence for "Extraordinary Accomplishments in Design and Sales." She enjoyed a large, loyal following in the Tri-State area as well as acknowledgement from furniture manufacturers for her innovative approach to design. Pia loved her years at LivingRoomsPlus. Her many years there were very rewarding. Being involved in merchandising and designing a large showroom, working with the wonderful clientele and growing in talent and reputation paved the way for the next step. In February (2005), the store was sold and Pia decided the time was right to leave and start her own company. Thus, 'The Contemporary Couch' was born. With encouragement from Pia's loyal clients and manufactures throughout the home furnishings industry, Pia began 'The Contemporary Couch', a 6000 square foot design showroom in Carlstadt, NJ. This showroom combines her creativity as an artist with her skill as an interior designer and businesswoman. She is now one of only a handful of women business owners in the home furnishings industry.
