Ron Galella is not a 'paparazzo'. He is much more. He is a photo-journalist. He has made his mark in our lifetime as a man who captured our times for our generation. He photographed celebrities, and he made them celebrities. After all, what is a celebrity if no one wants to photograph them, (as much as they might seem to object)? Many times over the years we have had the pleasure of working with celebrities. Located in Bergen County, it is natural to meet professional athletes and musicians. This client is more than a celebrity. They are world famous photographers, known as the first (and possibly the best) paparazzi. I was a fan of Ron Galella's photos from the Studio 54 days to Jackie Kennedy, so when they contacted me to design their home, I was excited and honored. Their home is a collection, a gallery, a compilation of an incredible career of photographs of celebrities. They wanted an artistic flair to complement the photographs and found us online. Every part of this process has been enjoyable. This couple has stories about the famous; from Elizabeth Taylor to John Travolta to Andy Warhol and Dustin Hoffman. Having the pleasure of seeing these photos in their home and going to the book signing of his latest book "Warhol by Galella: That's Great," was only part of it for us. Designing the home and becoming friends with such wildly down-to-earth people was our favorite part. The great room with towering ceiling houses the largest and most notable black and white photos. I designed salon-type seating so the photos could be viewed from any side. Since the photos are the focal point and lead with a black, gray and white overtone, I felt red was the only color that could sit in the middle of the "field" without getting lost. An ottoman and swivel chair accent the room. The only pattern used is black and white and the custom rug is designed with a gradation of black and white with minor accents in red.
The room has a two-sided fireplace which is shared by the library. This room houses a collection of incredible art and photography books plus photographs taken of Andy Warhol. I chose four contemporary wing chairs - two black, two in a Warhol-like graphic multicolor print. The cocktail table holds the client's newest book on Warhol. For the rug I designed a Warhol-inspired repeat graphic rug. Mr. Galella wanted a quote of Warhol's woven into the rug. This was a first for me and I was excited by the challenge.
The rooms are complete. The client is very happy and this week New York magazine featured Galella's
For those of you who remember the hedonistic days of Studio 54, and the unique times and personalities of that era, here is a quote from the man Time magazine calls....... "Walking into Pia's amazing showroom, I was overwhelmed and felt that Ron and I would never come to terms over which direction to take (I'm traditional, he's contemporary). All I really knew was that I wanted high impact and drama to best showcase Ron's photography. The result has been absolutely magical-I got an intimate library devoted to photos of Andy Warhol, who is the subject of my husband's next book, Warhol by Galella: That's Great! (The Monacelli Press, Spring 2008). |
